The Senate and Christmas
“Hypocrisy can afford to be magnificent in its promises, for never intending to go beyond promise, it costs nothing”
- Edmund Burk
It began when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that senators might have to work through the Christmas break, including the Sunday after Christmas, if that’s what it takes to get through pressing legislation.
Responses:
Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ): Democrats couldn’t finish their laundry list of votes “without disrespecting one of the two holiest of holidays for Christians.”
Senator Jim DeMint (R-S): “… it’s sacrilegious and disrespectful. What’s going on here is just wrong. This is the most sacred holiday for Christians.”
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) e-mailing the text of a floor speech by Robert Byrd: “I don’t think we are showing proper respect to Christians in our country, and all over the world, for that matter, by publicly failing to observe that Commandment, that we keep the Sabbath Day holy and remember it.”
Brigadier General John Adams about working on Christmas: “We have one-hundred-and-fifty-thousand U.S. warriors doing their job over Christmas and the New Year; the U.S. Senate should do its job.”
