I would like to think that our nation's moral standards were higher than they appear to be now, but I am sceptical that our government was ever as queaky clean as we might have been led to believe. As a child I recall being perplexed by the fact that other nations hated Americans, when all I saw was that we were so kind to other countries in need. That being said, I believe there is no reason for us not to focus on raising the bar.
