Good article. My take on capitalism is it requires government to maintain order and reign in catastrophic imbalances. In Big Oil's case, the government's own agency failed miserably, even criminally. The fact that the Obama administration knew it was corrupt and failed to take action to follow up its' 'get tough' rhetoric may prove the fatal blow to any shot at a second term. As you correctly point out Dennis, we don't yet know the extent of the devastation and won't for a couple years. In 2011 and 2012, Americans will have a much better picture of the impact and judgement day for the President will follow. Like the Bush administration failure to act on the intelligence it was getting before 9/11, the Obama administration failed to act on the deep water drilling threat and lax oversight quickly enough. Mitigating the Obama lapse was the economic tsunami he inherited and rightly focused upon. But his man Salazar should be axed in the same way Brownie was axed after Katrina. Just like we teach our children, there are consequences for our actions (or inaction) and the first casualty within the administration is the man placed in charge of cleaning up the MMS mess. The impact of the oil disaster in 2012 will determine if the consequences reach as far as the Oval Office.
