Will They Ever Get It?
“United we stand; divided we fall”
- Aesop
I continue to be amazed at just how out of touch the Republicans are with the country. They, who under the Bush administration caused the failing of our nation’s economy, the flight of honesty and the loss of respect of the world, can still think only in terms of self. They are breaking our backs with “intent” and stifling our recovery with obstruction.
They don’t seem to realize that King George has left the building, and that a new President now sits in the White House. Instead of trying to right the wrongs of the Bush/Cheney regime, most of the remaining Republicans in Washington continue to cling to the belief that the previous administration’s policies are something to be admired.
Instead of admitting that Bush, Cheney and friends should be blamed for the demise of our country, the demigods of the Republican Party still adhere to the illicit tenets of the neoconservatives.
Although they have left us mired in two wars, with thousands wrongly dead and millions of innocents displaced, the Republicans continue to sleep contentedly, unmindful of the blood that stains their hands. And Dick Cheney has the unmitigated gall to actually snicker as he says, “Under Obama, the United States will be attacked.”
Instead of trying to think outside of the box in search of a solution to the shattered economy left by George Bush and Associates, they continue to chant the Republican mantra of “cut government, cut taxes,” while conveniently ignoring two key facts. One, the federal government increased more under the Bush administration than under any other president in history; and, two, tax cuts to the wealthy administered during the Bush years have been a key ingredient in the systematic dismantling of the American middle class.
Under Bush, Republicans took care of themselves and their buddies while adopting Marie Antoinette’s attitude of, “If there is no bread, let them eat cake.”
A mere twenty days into the Obama presidency and we already have to ask the question, “How can we survive as a Nation with children in adult clothing playing games with our lives?” The Republicans have shown, very clearly, that their idea of bi-partisanship is that the Democrats give in to everything the Republicans want. When met with any opposition to the way they want to play the game, the Republican’s first response is to threaten to pick up their toys and go home.
Recently, there was a news article about how some Republicans feel Obama is not being “presidential” because he does not demand ties and suits be worn at all times in the Oval Office. Did you think for one minute we, the people, should be concerned about that? Or the fact that Bush locked Collin Powell out of a meeting for being 15 minutes late? This is what was important to the Republicans. But the idiocy of the Bush administration showed it was unable to provide for the greater good.
If we are to survive, we must become united as a people. For now, we must become one, a whole entity working for survival without playing childish politics.
I don’t care if Obama allows casual clothes on weekends with his staff. I don’t care if he and his staff make a couple mistakes learning how to untangle the mess they inherited.
I care about my country. I care about humanity between us all, for we are falling deeper than most have ever seen. But I fear truly becoming the UNITED States of American, is a dream receding into the ether while the Republicans continue praising Bush and following the teachings of Karl Rove like lemmings to the edge of the cliff.
My hope is to awaken one morning and know that America is still the dream come true of my childhood. For that to happen, all parties of America will have to find the ability to speak as one soul, with one goal - to make a UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
