It was the first debate and Obama acquitted himself well. I don't think the format allowed him time to discuss the details of the surge, and I think for now there is no need to drag out the heavy artillery. I do think mentioning McCain's IAVA numbers would have effective. He probably would have blown his top and that is the kind of reaction that Obama should try for. It's not too late. Don't be surpised if it pops up with mention of the Keating 5 in debate #3.

I watched this debate with great interest. My feeling is Obama spent too much time saying McCain was right. And he left too many 'kill shots' in his quiver. As Dennis writes, it would be easy to debate the effectiveness of the Surge. For example, the results cannot be measured or known until the troops are withdrawn. I also was extremely disappointed at both candidates lack of leadership on the bailout. One of them could have led by demonstrating the severity (or lack thereof) to Main Street. When asked about the financial crisis' impact upon future federal budgets, they could have spelled out that Americans would be asked to sacrifice as the time to live within our means had arrived. One good point made by Obama was his comment that you can't use a hatchet where a scalpel is required. Unfortunately, he then went into promoting Head Start-type programs, which study after study have proven are ineffective at improving school performance of at-risk children.

Overall, I thought neither did enough. If the response meter on CNN is any indication, then to me McCain appeared to score more points with Independents.

I didn't think Obama came off strongly enough to sway voters on the fence, unfortunately. He had a good delivery and message with an appropriate amount of seriousness. If I had too look at McCain's silly shmirk and shaking head one more minute, I would have shut off the TV.
The tactic of repeating lies until they are taken as gospel is a standard one that swayed the last presidential election. It's sad that this has been so effective at winning elections. Do your homework, people!
